Yes, it was very real.
Blood in this kind of wrestling is usually real. It still is today. Back then ‘blading’ (cutting yourself with concealed razors) was very common, and it still was up until WWE’s current PG era. Matches like this are very real (especially in Japanese wrestling), even if the outcome is pre-determined.

Was that real barbwire?
I’ve fell cheek first onto spiked railings on a fence when I slipped during attempting to climb one, but would avoid barbwire at all costs due to what it can do to your clothes!

I think everyone confuses this bout with the lesser known, but far better barbed wire match from six months before where Cactus and Terry put on a near five star bout in the middle of a freezing building that wasn’t even a real sports arena.
If you can find a copy of that one, definitely check it out.

Stupid? You may not agree with it but you can;’t deny the problem of many wrestlers dying before their even 40. The abuse they put there bodies through, combined with there extensive touring schedule and the almost necessity to be the largest and strongest leads many young guys to use steroids or growth hormones. Then the painkiller use starts, become abuse, then a heavy addiction.
